Zahara Jolie-Pitt’s TB/AIDS Clinic

Posted in Africa, Celebrity on September 11, 2008 by missmwabi

Zahara’s parents, Brad and Angie are teaching their children about what it means to be a humanitarian early. They plan to build a clinic in Zahara’s homeland of Ethiopia for her to run and help people when she is older.

Good hearted Angelina Jolie is planning to build an AIDS clinic in Ethiopia, so her daughter Zahara can manage it when she is older. The Hollywood star will make a trip to her adoptive daughter’s native country to discuss building the medical center as part of the work of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, a charity she set up with her partner Brad Pitt in 2006. She tells People magazine, “We will be building a TB (tuberculosis)/AIDs clinic in Ethiopia. One we plan for Zahara to take over when she is older.

Who can be mad at that? I just love when adoptive parents keep the country where they adopt from on the adoptive kids minds. Don’t get me started on the Chinese teenager I saw once in a Chinese restaurant who was clearly adopted and who clearly looked down upon the Chinese waiters in the restaurant!!!

Trey Songz Engaged to Ethiopian Girlfriend

Posted in Africa, Celebrity, Music on September 9, 2008 by missmwabi

Ladies and Gents meet Helen.

She is the Ethiopian beauty that caused quite a stir when she told Lil Wayne, “thanks but no thanks” when he tried to holla.  She told him she already had a man and that man is R&B crooner Trey Songz. Weezy was quite taken aback by the rejection and told Vibe Magazine all about it.

“I don’t even wanna put that man out there, that might not be his girlfriend, but in her mind she think she yours, dog, and she told me no for you, so you’s a G. And this wasn’t long ago, this was recently, I was the president, I had all that going for me, b*$#&h said NO! She sent me a picture of y’all and everything, like that new video from 50 and Ciara, that’s how y’all was.”

Trey has been smitten for quite some time.  Here is what he had to say to Sister2Sister Magazine

Jamie: Your girlfriend is very pretty. I was really surprised!

Trey: [laughs] Why were you surprised?

Jamie: Well, because her look is so opposite of what the guys in the industry tend to go for. You know, she’s a pretty little brown-skinned thing.

Trey: She’s Ethiopian.

Jamie: What attracted you to her?

Trey: We met about two years ago. We started off just kicking it. She’s a dancer.

Jamie: What does that mean, “kicking it”?

Trey: We’d talk and chill. I didn’t see her much because when I met her, she was on the road with Omarion.

Jamie: She’s one of his dancers?

Trey: Now she dances for Chris Brown. She was on the road dancing for Omarion and Marques Houston at the time. Eventually we would talk on the phone, ’cause my homeboy Pleasure, from Pretty Ricky, actually hooked us up.

Jamie: He hooked you up?

Trey: Well, I’ll say he introduced us. From there, we went on that first tour together. I was on the Holiday Jam Scream Tour. She was on it too. We ain’t never really get a chance to kick it. She’d see me and she’d just kind of brush me off, but I’d be trying to holler at her. She’d see me with all different kinds of chicks and she wasn’t really feeling that.

The internets say this cute two-some have taken the next step and are engaged.

Congrats Helen and Trey!  You’ll make some pretty babies.

Souléymane Sy Savané’s Big Debut

Posted in Africa, Movies on September 9, 2008 by missmwabi

Souléymane Sy Savané’s debut in the big bright world of entertainment is with his new film, Goodbye Solo that premiered recently at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.

Goodbye Solo tells the story of Solo, a kindhearted and friendly 34-year-old Senegalese taxi driver in North Carolina, who is hired by William, a tough 70-year-old white southerner, to drive him in two weeks time to a mountaintop from which William plans to jump to his death. But Solo decides to charm his way into William’s life by becoming his driver, and this odd couple begin an unexpected friendship as Solo hopes to change the old man’s mind before the two weeks are up.

Watch a clip from the movie here

Newcomer Souléymane (Solo) Sy Savané was born in the Ivory Coast to a Woloff mother and a Mandingo father. Souléymane’s early desire to travel lead him to live in Paris, and later on, to take a job as a flight attendant with a Pan African airline. Eventually, he landed in New York where he lived for 7 years. It was while in Gotham that he decided to study acting and would book the lead role in Goodbye Solo, his first feature.

Reviews from the festivals are in and Souléymane’s portrayal of Solo is connecting with viewers in a personal way.

Savané, who is a new screen presence to me, invests so much humanity and charisma into his character that he is a delight to watch and is the magnetic core of this astonishingly well-acted indie. Sandy Mandelberger, Toronto FF Dailies Editor

What gives it distinction, beyond Savané’s infectious personality, is the continued particularity of Bahrani’s work: In his last three films alone, he’s introduced us to a Pakistani street coffee vendor (Man Push Cart), a Latino orphan working in a black-market body shop (Chop Shop), and now a Senegalese cabbie. Scott Tobias, A.V. Club

As Solo, Savané shows us shadow, light, love and manhood with a natural charisma that fills the screen.” Jane Schoettle, Toronto FF

Goodbye Solo won the prestigious FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Congratulations Mr. Sy Savane! You are well on your way.
