Korto Shines on Project Runway 5

Posted in Africa, Fashion & Style on July 19, 2008 by missmwabi

I am a HUGE fan of Project Runway! It was a pleasant surprise to find that this season, there are not one, not two but three black contestants on the show!!! Talk about Christmas in July!  And one of the black contestants is AFRICAN. Major brownie points for that one Mrs. Seal!

Korto is 33 and is originally from Liberia.  Korto moved to Canada to attend fashion school. After school, she moved outside of Little Rock, Arkansas, where she now resides with her husband and daughter. Drawing from her African roots, Korto infuses tribal details into her classic designs. She is inspired by rich fabrics and textures and says her designs are intended for real, full-figured women. In her spare time, Korto works as a freelance fashion photographer, dances in an African dance troupe and does African hair braiding and makeup. She says her family considers her to be fun and easygoing.

The first challenge was a throwback to Season 1 where contestants had to design an outfit from things they bought at a grocery store.  Austin Scarlet’s corn dress from Season 1 pretty much put him in fashion history books everywhere.  Korto designed a kimono style dress that I need in my closet ASAP.  Even though she used a tablecloth, she did get high marks from the judges for accesorizing with kale and tomatoes.

I can’t wait to see what Korto as in store for the rest of the season.  Go girl!!!!

Swaggerific Alert – Top 25 from Ebony Magazine

Posted in Celebrity, coverboy on July 3, 2008 by missmwabi

Ebony Magazine got this right alright! Have you ever seen anything more mmh, mmh good? I, along with many many women and men are fanning themselves right now.  And to think people said Clinton gave them fever…*smh*  Never in the history of presidential candidates has one made so many people’s “babydaddy list”..I’m just saying.

Ebony magazine outdo themselves and have a record number 8 covers to show us that they are not playing with you when they picked 25 of the coolest brothers of all time.  I agree with 6 of the 8 covers…I just have never understood 2 of these choices.

Akon & The Gloved One (MJ) Part 2

Posted in Africa, Celebrity, Music on July 2, 2008 by missmwabi

They colloborated before on Wanna Be Starting Something for the 25th anniversary of the Thriller album and reviewers loved Akon’s African spin on the song.

They have colloborated again and well, lets just say someone at Universal was very busy in the last 24 hours because many websites had the song and now it has magically dissapeared.

A song that the two worked on for Akon’s upcoming album has leaked to the Internet, and it’s called “Hold My Hand.” A mid-tempo ballad featuring strings at its beginning, “Hold My Hand” layers the singers’ vocals over a drum machine and a twinkling piano melody as the pair trade off lyrics like “We’re better off being together than being miserable alone” and “Nothing can come between us if you just hold my hand.” Jackson’s softer, more lilting vocal lines start the duet, but Akon soon becomes dominant, thanks to his distinctive phrasing.

Akon’s label rep said that the singer’s as-yet-untitled third album, due later this year, has not been completed, so there’s no word on whether “Hold My Hand” will make the cut, and as such, there hasn’t been any plan to release the song as a single.

Akon previously told MTV News that working with MJ was a dream come true, calling the King of Pop “incredible” and a “genius.”

“Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt everything I wanted to accomplish in life has been achieved,” Akon said. “That aura … that’s how incredible that aura is. We about to shake the world up, man. You know how you be with somebody and you can’t even explain [the feeling]? I used to sit and think, ‘How does somebody sell so many records and dominate a whole business genre to a point [where] nobody can’t be a part of that without associating with you?’ The way he thinks … some artists think regional, some think national, I was thinking international. He thinks planets. It’s on another level.”

And although those who heard the song say they love it, the jokes are plenty because of the song title and MJ’s legal troubles over the years.

Jaden and Willow Smith showed their Dad their support at the Hollywood Hancock premiere.

Looking just like their Mama and Daddy.

And Diddy and his mini-me Christian were there too.
