Um Ebony, Where’s Sophie?

Posted in Africa, Celebrity, Movies on October 15, 2008 by missmwabi

I love the 3 lovely ladies that cover November’s issue of Ebony but I was dissapointed that Sophie Okonedo didn’t make the cover.  Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo ALL star in The Secret Lives of Bees in theatres this Friday.

The Headline clearly screams THE VOICES OF AMERICA as they are making the point that all 3 ladies went from the music world into the film world but still.  This is an ensemble cast and Sophie shouldn’t have been left out.

Sophie is featured inside the magazine but I’m still salty that she was snubbed on the cover *hmph*  This isn’t just another actress Ebony, she is an Academy Award nominated one.  And they didn’t even interview her! She was right there!!!! A 6 page spread and all she gets is one quote?! Come on! This is why I do what I do and represent my clients the way I do.  We deserve the spotlight too people!

I read that Tyler Perry was engaged to an Ethiopian beauty and thought ok, whatever cause that man is linked to everybody from Oprah to Tyra to Taraj and people been trying to marry him off since he hit the scene.

The couple looked gorgeous at the opening of his new studio in Atlanta over the weekend.  Her name is Gelila Bekele ans she is a model.  Ethiopian girls are doing it!

Souléymane Sy Savané’s Big Debut

Posted in Africa, Movies on September 9, 2008 by missmwabi

Souléymane Sy Savané’s debut in the big bright world of entertainment is with his new film, Goodbye Solo that premiered recently at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.

Goodbye Solo tells the story of Solo, a kindhearted and friendly 34-year-old Senegalese taxi driver in North Carolina, who is hired by William, a tough 70-year-old white southerner, to drive him in two weeks time to a mountaintop from which William plans to jump to his death. But Solo decides to charm his way into William’s life by becoming his driver, and this odd couple begin an unexpected friendship as Solo hopes to change the old man’s mind before the two weeks are up.

Watch a clip from the movie here

Newcomer Souléymane (Solo) Sy Savané was born in the Ivory Coast to a Woloff mother and a Mandingo father. Souléymane’s early desire to travel lead him to live in Paris, and later on, to take a job as a flight attendant with a Pan African airline. Eventually, he landed in New York where he lived for 7 years. It was while in Gotham that he decided to study acting and would book the lead role in Goodbye Solo, his first feature.

Reviews from the festivals are in and Souléymane’s portrayal of Solo is connecting with viewers in a personal way.

Savané, who is a new screen presence to me, invests so much humanity and charisma into his character that he is a delight to watch and is the magnetic core of this astonishingly well-acted indie. Sandy Mandelberger, Toronto FF Dailies Editor

What gives it distinction, beyond Savané’s infectious personality, is the continued particularity of Bahrani’s work: In his last three films alone, he’s introduced us to a Pakistani street coffee vendor (Man Push Cart), a Latino orphan working in a black-market body shop (Chop Shop), and now a Senegalese cabbie. Scott Tobias, A.V. Club

As Solo, Savané shows us shadow, light, love and manhood with a natural charisma that fills the screen.” Jane Schoettle, Toronto FF

Goodbye Solo won the prestigious FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Congratulations Mr. Sy Savane! You are well on your way.

Princess Sikhanyiso

Posted in Africa, Movies on June 8, 2008 by missmwabi

Alright, alright, I’ve neglected this blog lately.  Sue me! Take a chill pill already cause I’m back.

Princess Sikhanyiso of Swaziland is making quite a name for herself.

Lil Miss Princess was the ONE African that made the Forbes “20 Hottest Young Royals” in the world.

She came in at number 20.  Her Daddy is King Mswati and she is his oldest child.

I remember the day he became King.  He was 19 and he made history.

Princess Sikhanyiso steals the show in the upcoming documentary, Without The King.

Princess Sikhanyiso is a student in California and an aspiring rapper.

Interesting.

Without The King will be released in July and takes a hard look at the Swaziland monarchy.  Apparently, King Mswati does not have many fans in the country he rules.
